Strategic Congress Themes 2023

Governance x Climate

COP has had some significant outcomes since its first conference in Berlin.

Shaping the board’s strategic direction on climate change is key as we are in a decisive decade to accelerate action against climate change.  Board members have stewardship obligations that include taking action to address climate change within their organization and beyond.

Navigating Volatility

Global GDP forecasts continue to point to a modicum of growth, with deceleration expected in 2023.  Few executives have experience with the economic factors at play today. It has been more than 40 years since we’ve seen inflation this high—and interest rates are increasingly sharply at home and abroad.  Does the board understand management’s strategy, and the related risks, to maintaining a resilient organization?

Impact Investing

Major employers are investing in their workers and communities because they know it is the only way to be successful over the long term.  That pivot should catch the eye of a growing number of organizations committed to impact investing, the practice of investing in companies, organizations, and funds with the intention of generating not just financial returns, but measurable social and environmental impact as well.

Moral Money

With climate pledges unfulfilled and red flags over greenwashing multiplying, businesses and investors are being tasked by regulators and society to demonstrate progress they are making on their ESG goals. Calls for transparency and accountability are growing louder. Has ESG finally reached a turning point?

Boards x Investors

No matter what you may think of “activist investors,” companies should analyze their board composition through the same lens activists’ deploy.  Companies have a handful of strategic imperatives, key impediments to achieving those objectives, and a handful of key customers or verticals they are focused.

Transformation

Technology meets People.  What makes transformation a board requirement?  No matter what industry they operate in, all boards should aim to follow technology best practices. This starts with asking the right questions and determining meaningful metrics and governance to put in place to track progress.
